Research / Lab InterestsOur primary interest is epigenetic regulation of mammalian transcription in development and in carcinogenesis. Working with Chris Lowrey we have been investigating the developmental changes in chromatin structure during differentiation of cells from precursors into fully differentiated red cells. Our methylation studies were accelerated by the Molecular Biology shared resource. As part of those studies we have worked with the Transgenic shared resource to generate mice with a series of mutations in the beta-globin locus and with Scott Gerber, we were able to identify a novel beta-like globin protein produced in these mice. A recent collaboration with Ethan Dmitrovsky utilized the Transgenic Facility and generated an excellent new transgenic mouse model of lung cancer by expression of cyclin E in the lungs. In collaboration with Mardi Crane and with support of NCCC developmental funds, we have established a new facility to expose rodents to tobacco smoke. We are now collaborating with Crane and Dmitrovsky to expose the cyclin E transgenic mice to tobacco smoke and investigate how this influences the pathology and molecular changes of the lung cancers that develop. The pathology changes will be assayed with the assistance of the Pathology Research Service and the molecular changes will be assayed with the help of the Microarray and Bioinformatics shared resources. |
