Advanced Practice Nursing Awards of Excellence
Advanced Practice Nursing Awards of Excellence On October 16, the Advanced Practice Nurses group (APN) recognized two of their members for outstanding achievements at a dinner ceremony in Woodstock, VT.
The Academic Excellence Award acknowledges academic productivity is awarded based on quantitative evidence of achievement. The recipient of this award was Wendye DiSalvo, MSN , ARNP, AOCN who was recognized for her publications, invovlement in research, and prowess as an educator on local, regional, and national levels. Ms. DiSalvo is also currently enrolled in a doctoral program. Lastly, Ms. DiSalvo was honored for establishing DHMC's first Tobacco Cessation Clinic, serving the needs of patients and families both with and without cancer.
The Overall APN Excellence award went to Peggy Bishop, MSN, ARNP for her excellence and dedication to palliative care. Specifically, Ms. Bishop was honored for her ability to work with patients and their families in a truly skilled and compassionate manner. Ms. Bishop also was acknowledged for her services as a mentor and evangelist for palliative. Ms. Bishop received this award as a result of many nominations from NCCC colleagues.
Cancer Center Nurse Leads CALGB Clinical Trial
Ellen Lavoie Smith, PhD(c), MS, APRN-BC, AOCN is chairing the first nurse-led drug intervention clinical trial for CALGB. CALGB 170601 will open later this year to determine the effects of duloxetine on patients with painful chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). CIPN is characterized by numbness and painful tingling in the feet and hands and often results from chemotherapy treatment. CIPN sufferers can have trouble sleeping, walking, grasping objects, and with fine motor skills like typing or other close work.
Tiffany Blake Fellowship Awarded
One of two significant career development fellowships for young investigators has been awarded to Kathleen Lyons, ScD, OTR, a project coordinator in psychiatry, by The Hitchcock Foundation. Lyons will study the care and rehabilitation of older adults with cancer during one year of funded educational activities and research.
ACS Institutional Grant Available
Norris Cotton Cancer Center is pleased to announce that funds for seed money grants are again available from our American Cancer Society (ACS) Institutional Grant. Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2007 and will be reviewed for funding priority by the local ACS/IRG Review Committee.
The principal purpose of these grants is to support studies undertaken by investigators who are early in their careers and need pilot data before submitting individual research grant applications. They must not hold an academic rank above Assistant Professor. Research associates, instructors, and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible. Deborah Steele Elected to CPEN Board of Directors
Deborah Steele, Supportive Services Coordinator at Norris Cotton Cancer Center, has been elected to serve as a Board Member for the Cancer Patient Education Network (CPEN) for 2007 - 2009. CPEN is a national organization for health care professionals who work in the area of cancer patient education, and their mission is to promote and provide models of excellence in patient, family, and community education across the continuum of care. CPEN also maintains a strong collaborative pratnership with the National Cancer Institute.
