Benign Breast Conditions

The breasts can undergo changes that cause symptoms such as lumps or inflammation. Benign breast conditions are common, and not cancerous.

During a complete breast exam, we evaluate all patients to determine if their condition is benign, and if they need further diagnostic tests or treatment.

We treat many types of benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions, including:

• Breast pain (mastodynia)
• Breast infection (mastitis) and breast abscesses
• Non-cancerous breast lumps (fibrocystic changes, fibroadenomas, lipomas cysts, papillomas)
• Enlarged breast tissue in a man (gynecomastia)
• Nipple problems (eczema, duct ectasia, periductal mastitis, nipple discharge)
• Pregnancy and lactational changes (lactating adenoma, galactocele)
• Conditions of the skin (eczema, sebaceous cyst, Paget's disease of the breast)
