About Us

The Blood and Marrow Transplant program at Norris Cotton Cancer Center started in 1984 with a focus on finding new and innovative treatments. We offer autologous transplants (where a patient receives their own stem cells) as well as allogeneic transplants (where the patient receives stem cells from someone else). We strive to evaluate the long-term psychological health and social development of our patients after bone marrow transplant. Above all, we endeavor to provide a balance of comfort and the highest quality medical care for our patients.

Norris Cotton Cancer Center’s Blood and Marrow Transplant team includes more than 20 members. As a potential patient, you will meet one of our six full-time physicians, or one of the three nurse practitioners. Each physician is board-certified in internal medicine and hematology. Most physicians are also board-certified in medical oncology. Each nurse practitioner has more than ten years of experience in caring for blood and marrow transplant patients.

Our dedication to quality care has paid off. Our four-year survival rate is 52% in the last 54 patients treated for Non-hodgkins Lymphoma (1993-2001) as compared to the national average of 38% (IBMTR Data 2001). Our patients have expressed great satisfaction.

The in-patient blood and marrow transplant unit is designed to provide a relaxing environment. Each private room is cheerfully arranged with comfortable, adjustable beds, Bose stereo systems, TV, VCR and a fabulous view of the mountainous Upper Valley region.

Our outpatient blood and marrow transplant services allow patients to live comfortably at home or in lodging nearby while receiving treatment.

Our Bone Marrow Transplant Program is an accredited collection center for the National Bone Marrow Donor Program, and actively participates in national cooperative group trials by the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB). The program also collects, analyzes, and evaluates outcomes as a member of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR).

Research is essential to the improvement of our treatment techniques. Our team utilizes modern technology and current clinical trials to improve the quality of health care at Norris Cotton Cancer Center.
