Introduction: The Cancer Center and the Rubin Building Expansion

This newly expanded facility reflects the vision of Dr. Mark Israel, Director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, and sets the standard for a technologically advanced research center. It will double the square footage of the original Cancer Center, from 100,000 SF to 200,000SF (existing space will also be renovated).

The entire facility, from the largest spaces to the smallest details, has been designed to encourage and foster collaboration. The design reflects both function and beauty.

The new facility features an innovations in how space is used to foster collaboration among researchers. Laboratory spaces on the sixth and seventh floors that are open, with moveable modules, enabling scientists to see each other, talk with each other and engage in the collaborative process of research. The laboratory spaces, in particular, have been designed to encourage interaction among scientists.

Every opportunity has been used to bring people together - whether in casual lounge areas or informal meeting areas. Everything about the architecture suggests collaboration and creativity. It reflects Dr. Israel's philosophy that researchers should be clustered not cloistered.

This facility reflects the very culture at Dartmouth and the Cancer Center - collaboration! It is what makes us unique.
