Break Room

The Breakroom, enclosed by glass walls.

This glass-enclosed central area is a break room for lab techs and students who staff the labs. Federal regulations do not permit food or drink in laboratories, and this provides a convenient location for snacks or lunch. The spiral staircase was added for easy access between laboratory floors -- it essentially makes two floors of laboratories into one, because it is easy to move from floor to floor without going out to the atrium.

Easy flow between floors allows for greater sharing of equipment between the two floors. Immediately adjacent to the lab benches are a number of procedure rooms for tissue culture, radioisotope work, special microscopes with advanced stability, animal operating room, and other procedures that require specific equipment not available at the lab bench. These are all shared rooms.

The Breakroom is connected by stairs between floors 6 & 7.
